Kate Hertweck
Scientist and Adventurer
The sheer number of Bill Nye the Science Guy reruns Kate watched during her childhood in southern Indiana may have foretold her eventual career as a scientist. Following completion of her B.S. at Western Kentucky University and Ph.D. at University of Missouri, Kate escaped the Midwest and settled in North Carolina. Despite enjoying the process of hunting elusive plants in the wild, she’s traded in her field boots for mostly computational biology research these days. She is currently employed as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center and spends much of her time thinking about one or a combination of the following: evolution, comparative genomics, communicating science, teaching, travel, adventure, and knitting.
