Parent and Biologist
JF is the son of a scientist and a preacher, and a proud native of Lexington KY. After attending college at Emory University, he moved to St. Louis where he received his Ph.D. in developmental biology from Washington University and married Amy, a fellow scientist and Lexington native. In 2006, he and Amy settled in the Durham/Chapel Hill area, where they are raising their two delightful and energetic children. JF is an associate professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Duke University. There, he and his colleagues study the many wonderful ways in which microorganisms dwelling in the intestine shape the health of humans and other animals.
