James Chappel
Duke history professor
James Chappel teaches European history at Duke, where heβs finishing a book manuscript on Catholicism and twentieth century European politics. A native of central Florida, he went to college at Haverford and worked for a bit in England and China before deciding to turn history into a career. He is fascinated by the way that religion can bring out the best and the worst in people, both historically and in his own life. He lives in Durham with his wife, dog, and cat, whom he loves in that descending order.
