angie beatty
Vegan-beatboxing-Black feminist-disabled veteran
A born creative, angie explored visual art around age 3, but was “discouraged” by her parents after she, incessantly, “muralized” their living room walls with stick families (inexplicably, calling them “68s”)-requiring them to paint, repeatedly. After graduating from Hillside High School (Durham), she worked as an Air Force weather specialist before obtaining her BS in psychology (Delaware State University) and PhD in communication (University of Michigan)-becoming Grand Slam Champion of the Ann Arbor and University of Michigan College Unions Poetry Slam Teams (2001) along the way. She authored “What Is This Gangstressism in Popular Culture?” in Anita Harris’ Next Wave Cultures: Feminism, Subcultures, Activism (2007), and earned both an Echoing Green Fellowship for social entrepreneurship for addressing childhood obesity-receiving praise from Michelle Obama-and the St. Louis Grand Slam Poetry Championship (2009). angie has shared the stage with artists Bahamadia, Regie Gibson, and Saul Williams, and makes kick-ass vegan cornbread dressing.
